Connect your own router
The $50 GST-inclusive BYO fee covers service setup. You configure and support your own router, wireless network and mesh equipment. RileyNet supports the fibre connection.
Check your router first
Send Riley the make and exact model before ordering. Check that you own it or have permission to keep it, can sign in to its settings, and have an Ethernet WAN port. A router with only a DSL phone-line input cannot connect directly to an Ethernet ONT. For all RileyNet plans, check that its WAN and LAN ports support gigabit Ethernet.
Get the settings for your connection
Wait for Riley to confirm the activation date, ONT port, internet connection method, and whether a VLAN ID or credentials are required. If you have only part of that information, ask for the rest before changing your settings.
Configure the internet connection
- Save a copy of your existing configuration using your router manufacturer’s instructions. Keep it until the switch is complete.
- On the agreed date, connect the confirmed ONT Ethernet port to your router’s WAN or Internet port.
- Open the router’s Internet or WAN settings. Select the connection method Riley supplied. Enter credentials or a VLAN ID only if Riley supplied them for this service.
- Save the settings and check the WAN status page. Look for a connected state and an assigned address, then load a fresh web page from a wired device.
If it does not connect
Record the WAN status or error and which ONT port you used. Riley can check activation and service settings. Your manufacturer or installer is the contact for BYO configuration, firmware, wireless settings or mesh pairing. Keep credentials out of screenshots.
Translate the fields on your WAN screen
Internet connection type chooses how your router gets online. If Riley specifies automatic IP (DHCP), choose that option. If Riley specifies PPPoE, choose PPPoE and enter the connection username and password supplied for your address. These are separate from the Wi-Fi password.
VLAN ID is a network tag. Some routers put this under Internet, IPTV or VLAN settings. If Riley gives you an ID, apply it to the internet WAN interface. If the instructions specify untagged service, leave tagging off. Leave unspecified settings such as DNS and MTU at their existing defaults unless Riley asks you to change them.
After saving, check the WAN status. “Cable disconnected” points to the physical link. “Authentication failed” on a PPPoE service points to the login details. A cable link with no assigned address is worth reporting with the port number and connection type. Other providers publish their own settings, so avoid copying a Spark login or VLAN from their help page.
