Test with an Ethernet cable
A wired test helps Riley tell whether a slow connection comes from Wi-Fi coverage or the link into your home.
Connect a single test device
Use a computer with a gigabit Ethernet port or gigabit USB adapter and a Cat 5e or better cable. Plug it into a spare LAN socket on the router. Leave the existing cable to the ONT connected. Turn Wi-Fi off on the computer so the test uses the cable.
Read the link speed
Look in the computer’s Ethernet connection details for link speed. If it reports 100 Mbps, that local link cannot measure your fibre plan at full speed. Try a different cable, adapter or spare LAN port. A 1 Gbps link describes the local connection capacity, not the result you should expect from every internet test.
Record a useful result
Pause downloads and backups while testing. Record the time, server, download and upload measurements and, if available, the link speed. Repeat once using the same server, then test Wi-Fi on the same device. Send both results if the issue continues, and re-enable Wi-Fi when you finish.
